Our mission

We pay attention—so progress cannot become a promise without proof.

CABIC is a North Carolina nonprofit organization committed to the recruitment, retention, and success of Black students, faculty, and staff at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

We review data, listen to the people experiencing Carolina today, engage University leadership, and keep the broader Black alumni community informed. When needed, we bring forward ideas, recommendations, and questions that deserve an answer.

“A strong Carolina requires an informed and engaged Black Carolina.”

What we monitor

Three measures. One standard: meaningful progress.

Representation matters. Belonging matters. Outcomes matter. CABIC looks at all three.

01

Recruitment

Who sees Carolina as a place for them? We follow the pathways that shape applications, admission, enrollment, hiring, and yield.

  • Student enrollment
  • Faculty and staff hiring
  • Outreach and access
02

Retention

Getting to Carolina is only the beginning. We examine the conditions that help Black students and employees remain, thrive, and belong.

  • Campus climate
  • Support and belonging
  • Faculty and staff experience
03

Success

We look beyond presence to outcomes—academic progress, graduation, professional growth, leadership, and lasting connection.

  • Student outcomes
  • Professional advancement
  • Alumni connection
7.8%

of UNC’s incoming class identified as Black or African American in each of the two admission cycles following the 2023 Supreme Court ruling—down from 10.6% beforehand.

Why this work matters

Data tells us where to look. People tell us what it means.

CABIC connects institutional data with the voices of Black students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Numbers identify a trend. Listening reveals its impact. Accountability turns both into action.

How we work

Access with purpose.

We create informed, direct conversations between the Carolina community and the people responsible for shaping its future.

Dialogue

Chancellor Conversations

What guides us

For Carolina—and accountable to Black Carolina.

01

Evidence

We ground our work in credible data, institutional history, and lived experience.

02

Independence

We engage University leadership constructively while preserving an independent alumni voice.

03

Continuity

We connect generations so hard-won lessons, relationships, and progress are not lost.

Leadership

Experience in service of the next generation.

CABIC is governed by Black Carolina alumni whose leadership spans public service, law, education, health, development, and storytelling.
